学習目標(到達目標) Students will become familiar with the English terminology related to each religion, art and architectural forms.

各宗教、美術、建築様式に関する専門用語を英語で理解する。

Students will develop descriptive vocabulary to allow them to effectively express their opinions on various religions and art forms based on the respective religions.

様々な宗教、およびそれに基づく芸術形式について、自分の考えを効果的に表現できるように、関連語彙を増強する。

They will learn to identify roots of current art forms that are related to various religions.

現在における芸術形式の根源となる、様々な宗教との関連性を、識別することができるようになる。

Finally, they will present their own art work based on one or more religions using the concepts or principles of religious art.

ひとつ、もしくは複数の宗教をもとに、宗教芸術の概念、原理を生かした学生自身の作品を提出する。
授業概要(教育目的) This course will reflect on how art and architecture are influenced by various religious belief systems. We will first look at the art work and architecture generated by major religions in Asia: Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shintoism. Next, we will look at western religious belief systems, and the art work generated by Religion in Ancient Greece and Rome and Christianity.

美術、および建築様式が、様々な宗教から受けた影響を学んでいきます。まず、アジアの主要宗教、すなわちヒンズー教、仏教、道教、神道を。次に、西洋の宗教、すなわち古代ギリシャと古代ローマの宗教、キリスト教を。各々の宗教の産み出した芸術作品、および建築様式を考察します。

Since Confucianism is a doctrine about how to live, students will create their own doctrines on how to live a fulfilling life in modern times. Their doctrine should reflect on some of the ideas discussed in this unit. (Basically, you will need to write a guidebook on how to live well.) Students will present their doctrine in class for open discussion.

Draw yourself as a Roman emperor or empress. Consider the leadership qualities about which you feel most strongly and how they could be most clearly expressed through the style of the artwork, the accessories you are holding or wearing, and the place the artwork would be on view.

To learn to look closely at a work of art and consider line, shape, color, texture, and composition.
To understand that art is a form of communication.

To learn that a work of art can provide information about the ideals and beliefs of the society in which it was made, in this case the early Byzantine Empire.
To learn how artists illustrate narratives in their work by selecting key events and by using symbols to help convey the meaning of a scene.
To learn what relief sculpture is and that it requires great skill in design and production.

Students will look at paintings as illustrations of daily life.
Students will document in writing what they see.
Students will learn to use primary source materials as reference for details and facts about daily life.

Students will present and discuss their art work in the form of a classroom exhibition.

授業形式 The classes will begin with informative sessions that will be followed by analysis of various religions and religious art forms as a class, in small groups and individually.

はじめに、各宗教と宗教芸術についての説明、その後、クラス単位で、小グループで、個人で、分析する。
成績評価方法・基準 Participation 40%, Weekly Assessment: 30% Final Assessment 30%

テキスト(教科書) The course will use material developed by the instructor specifically for the class and online resources. Students will need to have and bring a computer to class unless specified by the instructor.

Students will conceptualize and develop an art work of their own based on any one or more of the religions and religious art work of their choice. The art work will be developed using the student’s medium of choice, preferably from their chosen major.
